Speech, language and social communication support for children in Cairo

CIPPO's Social Speech Development sessions help children use speech and language with other people: holding a conversation, reading social cues and saying how they feel. CIPPO is based in New Cairo and works with families across Cairo.

Some children have plenty of words and still find talking with people hard. Parents describe it to us like this. Talks, but conversations are one-sided or end after a single exchange. Finds it hard to take turns, stay on a topic or notice when the listener has lost interest. Takes words literally and misses jokes, hints and tone of voice. Chats at home and goes quiet with other children or at school. Cannot easily tell you what happened in their day or how they felt about it. Is left out of games because joining in and negotiating is difficult. A quiet child is not always a struggling one. What matters is whether your child can say what they need to, and be understood.

Language for real situations. Social Speech Development works on pragmatic language, which is the use of language with other people: starting a conversation, keeping it going, repairing it when it goes wrong and adjusting to who is listening.

Feelings into words. Sessions build the vocabulary and the confidence to express emotions, so that frustration comes out as a sentence more often than as behaviour.

Seeing the other person's side. Perspective-taking is practised directly: what does the other person know, what do they want, and how did what I said land with them.

What this does not cover. Social Speech Development is about how a child uses language with others. It does not focus on the pronunciation of individual sounds or on stammering. If you are unsure which kind of difficulty you are seeing, an Observational Assessment or a message to CarePlanning is the place to begin.

School is where social communication is tested hardest: group work, the playground, answering in front of the class. A CIPPO inclusion practitioner, what many parents call a shadow teacher, can support your child in those moments during the school day.

Sessions are delivered by CIPPO practitioners from psychology, speech and language support, occupational support and education, who work as one team under supervision.

Frequently asked questions

Does CIPPO offer a diagnostic assessment for speech and communication?

Yes. An Observational Assessment looks at how your child communicates and plays, and CIPPO's comprehensive diagnostic assessment adds cognitive, social-emotional and attention assessment where a fuller picture is needed. You receive written findings with recommendations for home and school.

What is the difference between a speech delay and a social communication difficulty?

A speech or language delay is about how many words a child has and how clearly they say them. A social communication difficulty is about using the words they have with other people. A child can have one without the other. Social Speech Development works on the second.

My toddler is not talking yet. Is this the right service?

Social Speech Development is for children who already use words and sentences. If your child is not talking yet, message CIPPO's CarePlanning team, who will tell you honestly whether CIPPO is the right place to start. It is also worth mentioning to your child's doctor.

What ages does CIPPO work with?

CIPPO works with children and teenagers from about 2 to 18. The practitioner shapes each session to your child's age and stage.
