Support for children with learning difficulties in Cairo

CIPPO supports children who find reading, spelling, memory or keeping up in class harder than expected, through Arrowsmith sessions, LSI sessions and Academic Skills Development. CIPPO is based in New Cairo and works with families across Cairo.

A bright child who struggles at school is confusing for everyone, the child most of all. Parents often describe some of these. Reads slowly and with effort, and loses the meaning along the way. Spells the same word several different ways on one page. Understands when told something and is lost when asked to read it. Forgets what was taught yesterday, however hard they worked. Takes hours over homework that should take minutes. Avoids schoolwork and has started to say they are stupid. These do not mean a child cannot learn. They usually mean the way they are being taught does not match the way they learn.

Strengthening how a child learns. Arrowsmith sessions do not re-teach the lesson. They use targeted mental exercises to strengthen the cognitive functions that learning depends on, such as attention, memory, processing and reasoning.

Reading and spelling. LSI, Literacy through Symbol Imagery, builds a child's mental picture of sounds, words and concepts. Sessions work on the processes underneath reading and spelling, aiming at accuracy, fluency and comprehension.

Foundations and confidence. Academic Skills Development works on learning foundations: attention, phonological awareness, organization, confidence and motivation. It joins academic support with social-emotional and executive skills, so a child becomes more independent as a learner.

Not the same as tutoring. A tutor teaches the subject. These sessions work on the skills underneath the subject. Some children need one, some the other, and some both.

When the difficulty shows most in the classroom, a CIPPO inclusion practitioner, what many parents call a shadow teacher, can support your child's access to learning during the school day: breaking tasks down, keeping pace with the lesson and building the habit of asking for help.

Sessions are delivered by CIPPO practitioners from psychology, speech and language support, occupational support and education, who work as one team under supervision.
