Sensory Swing Safety: Installation, Supervision and Care
Published 20 October 2026
A sensory swing is a lovely thing to have at home, and like anything a child climbs into and moves in, it needs to be hung well and used with care. This guide covers the three things that keep it safe: a secure installation, an adult nearby, and regular checks.
1. Installation: the anchor is everything
A swing moves, so its fixing carries more than the child's weight — it also takes the force of every rock and sway.
Choose the right ceiling.
- Concrete ceilings are generally suitable, using anchors designed for moving loads.
- Brick or masonry needs expert advice on the right fixing.
- A timber ceiling needs a load-bearing beam.
- Plasterboard (gypsum) and suspended ceilings are not suitable on their own.
That guidance comes from fixing manufacturer fischer (2020), which also advises securing nuts so they can't work loose and putting a soft floor below.
Use a qualified installer. They can confirm the ceiling, choose the fixing and set the height. CIPPO offers optional home installation with the CIPPO Sensory Swing, or you can use your own installer.
Follow the instructions and use the supplied hardware. Don't swap parts for hooks or cords that weren't made for a swing.
2. Space around the swing
- Keep clear space on every side the swing can travel, away from walls, furniture, windows, shelves and radiators.
- Put a soft surface underneath. The CPSC notes that falls cause most home play injuries and that carpet or thin mats alone don't absorb them well (CPSC Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook).
- Keep cords, ropes and loose ties well away. The CPSC warns that cords tied to play equipment can form loops that strangle (CPSC).
3. Supervision: always an adult nearby
- Stay close. A child in a sensory swing should always be supervised.
- Keep the face clear. Stretchy fabric can close around a child. An NHS handout for families on cocooning activities advises keeping the head uncovered so the child can breathe freely (East London NHS FT). Mesh hammocks without spreader bars, which let the bed close up around a child, have been linked to children strangling (CPSC, 1995) — never let fabric wrap around a child's neck.
- One child at a time, within the recommended age and weight. For the CIPPO swing that's ages 4–12 and up to 40 kg; its 80 kg load test is a safety margin, not a weight to use it at.
- No spinning to dizziness, no climbing on the anchor, no jumping out.
- Watch your child, not the clock. NHS guidance suggests keeping movement activities short and watching for signs of being over-stimulated: flushing, dizziness, nausea, or becoming upset or more wound-up (Derbyshire Healthcare NHS FT). Stop if you see them.
4. Regular checks
Before each use, take ten seconds to look at the fabric, seams, straps and connectors. Then, on a routine:
- Every use: the fabric for tears or thinning; straps and connectors seated and closed.
- Every two weeks: the ceiling fixing and nuts tight, with no movement or cracking around the anchor.
- Every month: the hardware for wear or rust; adjustable straps or chains for fraying.
For outdoor play equipment the CPSC recommends checking nuts and bolts twice a month and swing ropes monthly (CPSC) — a good rhythm indoors too.
If you notice damage or a possible safety issue, stop using the swing immediately and contact the seller. With the CIPPO swing, you can request a replacement or full refund within 30 days of receiving it if it has a manufacturing defect or does not match its advertised specifications (see the Return & Refund Policy on the product page).
5. Cleaning
For the CIPPO Sensory Swing: machine wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Avoid bleach, fabric softeners and tumble drying, and let it air dry completely before re-hanging. Check other swings' care labels — heat can weaken stretch fabrics.
